This edition focuses on the album The Come Back by Memphis Slim and His House Rockers featuring Matt “Guitar” Murphy.
Murphy wurde 1929 im Mississippi-Delta geboren, wuchs in Memphis auf und erlernte in den 1940er Jahren das Gitarrenspiel. In den frühen 1950er-Jahren war er, gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Floyd, ein fixer Bestandteil der Bluesszene in Memphis. Er war Mitglied in verschiedenen Bands, bevor er nach Chicago zog.
Matthew Tyler Murphy (December 29, 1929 – June 15, 2018), known as Matt "Guitar" Murphy, was an American blues guitarist. He was associated with Memphis Slim, The Blues Brothers and Howlin' Wolf. In 2012, Murphy was elected to the Blues Hall of Fame.
The timing was propitious, because he had just added the guitarist Matt "Guitar" Murphy to his group. He remained with United through the end of 1954, when the company began to cut back on blues recording. After 1954, Slim did not have a steady relationship with a record company until 1958, when he signed with Vee-Jay Records.
