Through his paternal grandmother Mary, Hamilton was the great-grandson of James II of Scotland. On the death of John Stewart, Duke of Albany, in 1536, Arran became the next heir of the Kingdom of Scotland after the king's descendants. Regent of Scotland.
Der Titel wurde in der Peerage of Scotland erstmals am 26. April 1467 an Thomas Boyd verliehen, wurde ihm jedoch bereits 1469 wegen Hochverrats aberkannt und erlosch. In zweiter Verleihung wurde der Titel am 11. August 1503 für James Hamilton, 2. Lord Hamilton neu geschaffen.
