Grammar school. An aerial view of Dunstable Grammar School , apparently taken while a swimming gala was taking place in the school pool, seen just behind the main building. On the pool's left is the collection of classrooms in what became known for many years as the “new” building, and the school's gymnasium is towards the right.
After 128 years, the school, bequeathed to Dunstable by Frances Ashton, has closed its doors to pupils for the last time. What's next? The developer, Weston Homes, says a sympathetic conversion into residences for some 100 people. Time will tell. See for more details.

AFC Dunstable started life as Old Dunstablians Football Club in 1981. The name Old Dunstablians originated from an organisation formed in 1888 for old boys from Dunstable Grammar School. The most famous member of the club is Hollywood actor Gary Cooper, who attended the school in the early 1900’s.
A school library containing two associated boards. On the west wall of the library in the centre is a stone, and brick fireplace, with an oak carved surround, and a five paneled oak board above the fireplace.
The school was originally founded by philanthropist Frances Ashton in 1728 and became Dunstable Grammar School in 1888 when the grand Victorian building was opened, designed in the style of a large country house.
