I consider him to be one of America's greatest living composers, but due to the segregated nature of our society, he and other African-American composers (including his fellow AACM composers Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, and Anthony Braxton) are not generally recognized as such, but only as jazz musicians.
