Villa Harrah is the legendary Lake Tahoe estate built in 1963 by Harrah’s Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino founder William F. Harrah. According to the locals, Bill Harrah had the absolute choice where to build on the lake since he was one of the first to do so. Born in South Pasadena, California, in 1911, Bill Harrah had to drop out of UCLA during the Depression, worked briefly in his family’s small-time entertainment businesses, then took over his Dad’s pool hall and bingo parlor in the 1930s.
In 1985, Harrah’s family endowed the University of Nevada’s Las Vegas with a generous gift to support hotel management education. Today, the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Adminsitration is one of the world’s top hotel programs–a legacy truly worthy of this gaming pioneer.
