He opens the disc with a jaunty acapella reading of Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" backed by four other fine singers (the same lineup does an equally enjoyable version of the Four Tops' "Reach Out, I'll Be There" later on.)

1. Juni 2002 · Kevin Mahogany is a bit of a quandary. A very fine jazz vocalist, Mahogany is not content just to recapitulate the standards. His current Pride & Joy and 2000's Pussy Cat Dues— The Music of Charles Mingus are both tightly focused efforts intent on shining a light on little illuminated corners of jazz. Pride & Joy is a swinging tribute to Motown.

In fall 2000, Portrait of Kevin Mahogany was released, followed by the Motown-centric Pride & Joy in 2002, the self-explanatory Big Band in 2005, and 2015's The Vienna Affair, the latter recorded in its namesake city with a quartet of Austrian musicians. Mahogany died in December 2017 at his home in Kansas City; he was 59 years old. ~ Scott Yanow
