Martin 000-28. Cooder is the proud owner of three instruments that came from Mike Seeger: a 1926 Gibson F-5 that belonged to Bill Napier (seen on pages 71-72 of FJ #32), a 1929 Martin 000-28 and this Gibson Style 6 Granada banjo. Both the banjo and the F-5 have matching diamond block inlays.
They brought Ry Cooder as a featured guest and a number of these singers and musicians became part of Ry’s Buena Vista Social Club, eg Omara Portuondo, Doc Made. “Santiago’ won a Grammy award for ‘Best World Music’ in 1997.
Here we have a live track released in 1977 from the live album Showtime which is a combination of a Tex-Mex polka piece and a Woody Guthrie song. Ry Cooder’s cover of “Do Re Mi” was originally featured on his 1970 debut. Both of the tracks have a heavy political stance and date back to the 1940’s and 50’s.
