Oja Kodar became Welles' longtime companion both personally and professionally from 1966 on. A year after Orson's death, Paola and Oja finally agreed on the settling of his will. On the way to their meeting to sign the papers, however, Paola was killed in a car accident.

She was a passenger in a car driven by a family friend that pulled into oncoming traffic. She died from her injuries at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas several hours later.
