JoeyStarr was found guilty of ill-treatment and illegally possessing a protected species in 2002 for which he paid a fine of 9750 euros ($9,100). While shooting for a program for the M6 channel, JoeyStarr slapped his pet monkey several times, which sparked a storm of protests by numerous animal rights activists, including the former actress Brigitte Bardot.
