Der Schiefe Turm von Pisa wurde in der ersten Phase unter dem Architekten und Bildhauer Bonanno Pisano errichtet. Das bestätigt nun ein Fund der Paleografie-Expertin Giulia Ammannati von der Scuola Normale di Pisa. Sie entzifferte einen Stein mit lateinischer Inschrift, der 1838 in Bonannos Grab bei Ausgrabungen um den Turm gefunden worden war.
Giulia Ammannati wurde 1538 in dem kleinen Dorf Villa Basilica in der Nähe von Lucca geboren . Sie stammt aus einer Handwerkerfamilie aus der Region Pistoia, die zuerst nach Pisa (1536) und dann in die Region Lucca zog, wo ihr Vater mit Holz handelte. Giulia ist das jüngste von fünf Kindern, vier Töchtern und einem Bruder (Leone).
Vincenzo Galilei was born around 1520 in Santa Maria a Monte in the Arno Valley. He was a lutanist and a music theorist. After studying in Venice under the guidance of Gioseffo Zarlino (1517-1590), he returned to Pisa and in 1562 married the young Giulia Ammannati (1538-1620).
