Willem Einthoven se narodil v tehdejší Nizozemské východní Indii, což je dnešní Indonésie, na ostrově Jáva. Einthoven was born on May 21, 1860 in Semarang, on the island of Java, then the Dutch East Indies and now part of Indonesia. There his father served as an army medical officer for the Netherlands. Einthoven lived there until he was ten years old when his mother, widowed four years before, decided to return to the Netherlands with her six children.
