Other institutional affiliations included Johns Hopkins University and the University of Copenhagen. His research interests included quantum theory and for the quantum mechanical description of atoms and molecules.
James Franck emigrierte im Jahr 1933 in die USA, nachdem er seine Professorentätigkeit an der Göttinger Universität aufgab. Dort war er Professor in Baltimore und Chicago. Er warnte 1945 im "Franck-Report" vor den Folgen des Einsatzes von Atombomben.
