Sophie Gray was the artist’s sister-in-law and one of his favourite models in the 1850s. She appears in his 1850s masterpiece, Autumn Leaves (1856), among other pictures. The present portrait, which relates closely to that work, was painted in the summer and autumn of 1857, when Millais and Effie were living with her parents and sisters at Bowerswell, the Gray family home in Perth.
