Ulrich Beck has emerged as one of the leading thinkers of the age. His principal claim to fame is as author of the widely acclaimed 'Risk Society', first published in 1986. Since this time, Beck's work has had a profound effect on the trajectory of social theory, leading to him being hailed as a zietgeist sociologist.
Ulrich Beck was born on 15 May 1944 in Stolp, then part of the German province of Pomerania, now part of Poland and called Slupsk. At the end of World War II, his family ed to Hanover, where he grew up. In 1966, aged 22, Beck started studying law at the University of Freiburg.
