She began her singing career with Benny Carter 's orchestra in 1944. In 1948 she began performing regularly in Chicago, where she lived for nearly four years before returning to New York.

The Flamingo, at 33 Wardour Street in Soho, was a dodgy basement nightspot that on the weekends remained open until 6 a.m. On the bright side, the club was known for its sterling sound system.
