Daseinsanalysis, the German word for “Existential Analysis,” is based on the phenomenological anthropology of Martin Heidegger (1889–1976), and the subsequent development of his thought for clinical endeavors in the 1940s by two Swiss psychiatrists, first, Ludwig Binswanger (1881–1966) and then Medard Boss (1903–1990).

Boss recognized that what Heidegger called anticipatory care was a consummate philosophical description of Sigmund Freud's technical recommendations for a therapist's relation to patients.
