USS Gerald R. Ford begynte sjøprøver med den amerikanske marinen i april 2017 og ble formelt levert 22. juli samme år. Det ble erklært innledende operativt i desember 2021 etter noen forsinkelser og har kjennetegnet CVN 78 på skroget (CVN (Cruiser Voler Nuclear) indikerer at det er et atomdrevet hangarskip).
