She was a daughter of Joseph-Gaspard de Tascher, chevalier, seigneur de la Pagerie, lieutenant of Troupes de Marine , and his wife, the former Rose-Claire des Vergers de Sanois, whose maternal grandfather was English .

She was the eldest daughter of Rose Claire des Vergers de Sannois and Joseph Gaspard Tascher de La Pagerie. Her first marriage was to Alexandre de Beauharnais in 1779. The marriage produced two children, including Eugène de Beauharnais. She remained married to Alexandre until his execution in 1794. She and Napoleon got married in 1796. The marriage was childless and ended in divorce in 1810.
