DDT ist ein lang anhaltendes und stark wirkendes Insektenvernichtungsmittel (Insektizid), das man früher mit dem nicht systematischen Namen D ichlor d iphenyl t richlorethan benannte. Es wurde im Jahre 1874 erstmals von Othmar Zeidler hergestellt. Die insektizide Wirkung entdeckte jedoch erst Paul Müller im Jahre 1939 in einem Labor der Geigy AG.
Dichlordiphenyltrichlorethan, abgekürzt DDT, ist ein Insektizid, das seit Anfang der 1940er-Jahre als Kontakt- und Fraßgift eingesetzt wird. Wegen seiner guten Wirksamkeit gegen Insekten, der geringen Toxizität für Säugetiere und des einfachen Herstellungsverfahrens war es jahrzehntelang das weltweit meistverwendete Insektizid.
