21. Aug. 2021 · 54 parties have applied for admission to the election, and 47 of these are now actually standing – more than in any previous election for the Bundestag. To enter the Bundestag each party has to receive at least 5 per cent of the votes cast. The parties that passed the 5 per cent hurdle for the 19th Bundestag in 2017 were the CDU/CSU, SPD, the Greens, FDP, The Left and the AfD.
The Basic Law stipulates that its Members be elected in "general, direct, free, equal and secret elections". "General" means that all German citizens are able to vote once they have reached the age of 18. The elections are "direct" because citizens vote for their representatives directly without the mediation of delegates to an electoral college.
