Dale grew up in Mansfield and graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1966.It was In high school that Dale first got together with drummer, Tim Corwin; rhythm guitarist Doug Grassel; Bassist Dean Kastran; and Keyboard player Jim Pfayler. Dale played lead guitar and sang in their renowned garage band “Sir Timothy and the Royals”.

Ohio Express were originally put together by bubblegum-pop producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeffrey Katz, who also worked with the Music Explosion and 1910 Fruitgum Co., in 1967.
