Hatte Gropius gemeinsam mit Adolf Meyer bereits 1911 das Fagus-Werk entworfen, ein Industriegebäude der architektonischen Moderne, folgten während seiner Zeit am Bauhaus (1919–1928) das Hauptgebäude der Schule in Dessau, die Meisterhäuser für die Lehrenden in Dessau-Roßlau sowie die Wohnsiedlung Dessau-Törten. 1928 übergab Gropius das Amt des Direktors an Hannes Meyer.
Die sogenannte Gropius-Türklinke wurde 1922 von Walter Gropius in Zusammenarbeit mit Adolf Meyer entworfen und in der vorliegenden Form und Größe 1926 im Bauhausgebäude eingesetzt. 1998 wurden die Schilde und Türdrücker bei Bauarbeiten im Bauhausgebäude geborgen.
