I don't know precisely why a sequel to "Lawrence of Arabia" was made 30 years after the original, but if it had to be made, a young Ralph Fiennes was a good choice to take on the titular role. The sequel just *barely* succeeds because of him, as it lacks the scope and grandeur of the original, with a lot more talking. Lots and lots of talking.
Chronologically the story follows on from David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) with the late Peter O'Toole playing Lawrence and "Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia" (1990) with Ralph Fiennes who played the title role. The film, for me, tries to show Lawrence's determination to expose the skullduggery perpetrated by the nations to not allow the formation of Arabia, but carve up the land & exploit it's resources.
