Abstract: Taking the cue from some of Lucio Colletti’s unpublished letters and writings, this article will focus on Colletti’s work from the 1967-1973 period. Here, Colletti interprets Marx’s theory of value in terms of a «real abstraction» – i.e. in terms of the alienation of individual private labours.
One of the most dramatic, yet shadowy, events touched upon by Guiseppe Fiori in his Antonio Gramsci: Life of a Revolutionary1 is the disagreement between Gramsci on the one hand and Togliatti and the Italian Communist Party on the other, after the political ‘turn’ brought about by the Sixth World Congress of the Communist International.
This collection of Colletti's (1924-2001) principal Marxist essays will be welcomed by non-Italian readers. Colletti's concern as a Marxist was twofold: to interpret Marxism as profoundly and as flexibly as possible; and to investigate the relationships between Marx's thought and that of a number of other thinkers as widely separated in time as Rousseau and Marcuse.
