  1. Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley by Paul Albert Besnard. Wolseley had what only be described as an illustrious military career. In 1857-53 he served in the Sepoy Mutiny and ac­companied the Anglo-French expedition into China in 1860.

Wolseley served with the British army in India, the Crimea and China. In 1861 he was sent to Canada as assistant quartermaster general, becoming deputy quartermaster general in 1865.
