Helen Levitt nació en Bensonhurst, Brooklyn en 1913 y comenzó a fotografiar a los 18 años. Helen Levitt Born in 1913, in Brooklyn, Helen Levitt spent her whole life in New York, where she produced the majority of her work. At 18, she learned to use a camera and dark room while working for advertising photographer J. Florian Mitchell.
Bereits 1959 etabliert Helen Levitt Farbe als künstlerisches Ausdrucksmittel und zählt somit zu den frühesten Vertretern der New Color Photography. Das Buch zur Retrospektive in der Albertina führt rund 130 ihrer ikonischen Werke zusammen. Einige der Bilder stammen aus Helen Levitts persönlichem Nachlass und werden hier zum ersten Mal öffentlich gezeigt.
