He studied a variety of disciplines such as politics and philosophy at university but is perhaps best known for his work in the field of sociology, where he believed that we have entered a ‘reflexive’ period in the modern era that is characterised by uncertainty and insecurity.
Ulrich Beck was born on 15 May 1944 in Stolp, then part of the German province of Pomerania, now part of Poland and called Slupsk. At the end of World War II, his family ed to Hanover, where he grew up. In 1966, aged 22, Beck started studying law at the University of Freiburg. After just one semester, he changed disciplines, obtaining a scholarship
