V roce 1972 řekl John redaktorovi časopisu New Musical Express, že píseň je jeho upřímná výpověď. Lennon nás v písni prosí, abychom si představili(Imagine) svět bez věcí, které rozdělují lidi (náboženství, státy, bohatství, předsudky). Takové místo by podle něj bylo mnohem lepší... John Lennon war ein Mitglied der legendären Band „The Beatles“ und wurde auch als Solokünstler sehr erfolgreich. „Imagine“ wurde in einer Zeit des sozialen und politischen Umbruchs veröffentlicht, als die Welt von Konflikten und Spaltungen geprägt war. Das Lied wurde zu einer Hymne für den Frieden und hat bis heute eine große kulturelle Bedeutung.
