Rhythm and blues, også forkortet til R&B eller RnB, er en musikksjanger innen populær afroamerikansk musikk som har sin opprinnelse i 1940-årene i USA. Begrepet ble opprinnelig benyttet av plateselskaper for å beskrive innspillinger markert hovedsakelig til urbane afroamerikanere på en tid da «urban, rockete, jazzbasert musikk med en tung, iherdig takt» ble stadig mer populært.
En 1949, Jerry Wexler du magazine Billboard utilise le terme de « rhythm and blues » en guise de terme musical aux États-Unis [10].Il remplace le terme de « race music » (musique raciale), qui venait à l'origine de la communauté noire, et était considéré comme péjoratif pendant la période d'après-guerre [11], [12].
