(Wild Mountain Thyme) Robert Tannahill (1774-1810) of Paisley wrote the lyrics for this song in the form of a poem called The Braes of Balquidder , which first appeared in print in 1742. Tannahill's version first appeared in a collection of songs in Pocket Encyclopedia of Scotch, English, and Irish Songs, II of 1818.
