Colter’s erstes und einziges Album für RCA war betitelt „A Country Star Is Born“ und wurde ein Flop. Bis zur Geburt des Country Stars Jessi Colter sollte es noch fünf Jahre dauern. Bis dahin war sie immer wieder mal auf einem Album-Cover ihres Ehemannes zu sehen – aber sie schrieb auch fleißig Songs und arbeitete an sich.
Colter släppte sin första skiva A Country Star Is Born 1970. [2] Fem år senare skrev Colter kontrakt med skivbolaget Capitol Records och fick därefter sitt stora genombrott med låten, I'm Not Lisa. Singeln toppade country-listorna och nådde en femteplats på poplistorna. 1976 deltog hon på skivan Wanted: The Outlaws, som sålde platina. [2]
