Denuelle was the product of Napoleon's affair with a young girl that worked for his sister named Elénore de la Plaigne. While he was never granted any legitimacy, Napoleon did apparently care for the boy and took care of his needs while he was able to.

[4] But Napoléon would break off this affair before he married his second wife as he saw it as his duty to be faithful to his new young princess bride.
