The song which became “Those Were the Days”, “Dorogoy Dlinnoyu” (“By the Long Road”), was written by Boris Fomin with lyrics by his friend, poet Konstantin Podrevsky in the early 1920’s. Even then, the melody may have had a Gypsy origin as Fomin’s mother-in-law was a famous Russian Gypsy singer and may have sung it.
