Keyboardist Darian Sahanaja (pictured 2019) was integral to the project's realization. In 1967, due to numerous difficulties surrounding the project, Brian Wilson abandoned Smile, an unfinished album that he had recorded with his band the Beach Boys, lyricist Van Dyke Parks, and numerous session musicians.

He came to prominence in the mid-1960s as the bass guitarist and occasional lead vocalist of the rock band The Zombies. White is one of the main composers of the Zombies' music, and made major lyrical contributions to the band's songs.
