3. Apr. 2023 · Beornwulf. Reign: 823 – 826. It’s safe to say that in this list of Mercian kings, Beornwulf was the least successful of all. In fact he single-handedly drove Mercia into terminal decline. He was defeated at the Battle of Ellandun against Wessex, during which the Mercian sub-kingdoms of Essex and Sussex switched sides.
Cynewald was the father of Creoda of Mercia and the son of Cnebba. As such, he was an ancestor of the royal house of Mercia. However nothing is known of him as a name in genealogies. He must have lived in the mid 6th century.

Ceolwulf II (died c. 879) was the last king of independent Mercia. [1] He succeeded Burgred of Mercia who was deposed by the Vikings in 874.
