She moved back to New Orleans and became a popular live performer. The artist had a comeback in the 1980s when The New Rules premiered. She received her first Grammy nomination for the project. In 1998, she received another Grammy nomination. Irma Thomas recorded several studio and compilation albums throughout her illustrious career.
Her next studio album, "Soul Queen of New Orleans" (Maison de Soul, 1977) was a modest effort, which mostly contained new versions of her old hits. "Safe With Me" (RCS, 1980) put her in a more modern setting, but despite receiving a good deal of initial attention for the album, the label wasn't able to make Irma a pop star.
