In early ’60s rehearsals at Young’s loft, Young, Cale and Conrad tuned their instruments to what Young called “the underlying drone of the city,” i.e. the 60-cycle hum of the city’s electrical system, as heard from your refrigerator or by tapping a guitar cable.
