Redgrave wurde als Sohn des Stummfilmstars Roy Redgrave und der Schauspielerin Margaret Scudamore geboren. Er studierte in Cambridge und wurde anschließend zunächst Lehrer, Herausgeber einer Zeitung und freier Journalist.
