Es sollten 18 Jahre vergehen, ehe mit „Superman Returns” im Jahr 2006 ein neuer Superman Film in den Kinos erschien.Obwohl man mit Brandon Routh einen neuen Superman-Darsteller präsentierte, gilt der Film als Fortsetzung der vorherigen Filme mit Christopher Reeve und nimmt auch inhaltlich Bezug auf diese Superman-Filme.
