The Mar-Keys, formed in 1958, were an American studio session band for Stax Records, in Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1960s. As the first house band for the label, their backing music formed the foundation for the early 1960s Stax sound.
The Mar-Keys (originally named The Royal Spades) were the backing band on many early Stax releases but also recorded singles of their own. In 1962 the rhythm section more or less evolved into Booker T & The MG's and later the horn section into The Memphis Horns.
Despite scoring only one national hit, the 1961 instrumental smash “Last Night,” the Mar-Keys remain one of the most important groups ever to emerge from the Memphis music scene.
