Bespectacled and velvet-smooth in the vocal department, pianist Ivory Joe Hunter appeared too much mild-mannered to be a rock & roller. But when the rebellious music first crashed the American consciousness in the mid-'50s, there was Ivory Joe, deftly delivering his blues ballad "Since I Met You Baby" right alongside the wildest pioneers of the era.
Oct. 10, 1911 - Nov. 8, 1974 Port Arthur, TX. "Ivory" Joe Hunter was born in Kirbyville, Texas, and moved. to Port Arthur at an early age. Born into a large and. musically accomplished family, his father was a guitarist and. preacher, and his mother sang spirituals.
Hunter continued to write, produce, serve as session musician, and perform. As a vocalist he recorded a great deal of material with Motown during the 1960s, including demos of his own compositions, but nothing was released until 1970, when Motown issued an Ivy Jo single on their soon to be discontinued VIP label entitled "I Remember When (Dedicated to Beverly)".
