ODEN BOWIE. Oden Bowie was born in 1826 at Fairview, the Prince George's County plantation of his father, William Duckett Bowie. After a heroic record in the Mexican War, he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates, and then served as state senator.

The only Mexican War veteran to have been elected governor, he descended from a long line of ancestors who had distinguished themselves in public service, and had long been prominent in Prince George’s County. His father had served as a member of the County Levy Court, a two-term member of the House of Delegates, and a colonel of militia.
ODEN BOWIE WAS BORN Nov. 10, 1826 at his family’s Prince George ’s County plantation, Fairview, in present-day Bowie, Maryland. Built in the 1780s, at the time, Fairview was home Oden’s parents, Col. William Duckett Bowie (1803 - 1873) and his wife Mary Eliza Oden (d.1849).
