His colourful, theatrical painting was inspired by the work of Paolo Veronese and also reflected the influence of artistic developments in Rome and Bologna.
Sebastiano Ricci trained with Federico Cervelli (c.1625–1700) in Venice; he worked throughout Italy before making several visits to Germany, where he was recorded in 1702, and England, where he spent the years 1712–6.
