Explore Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Located in northern California, near the city of Redding, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area was established on November 8, 1965. The park gets its name from a gold rush–era camp town that is now submerged in Whiskeytown Lake, a 3,200-acre reservoir formed by Whiskeytown Dam on Clear Creek, which is the center of the area.

This lake sits at about 2500 feet in elevation approximately 15 minutes west of Redding. Highway 299 runs through the middle of the Park.

3. Aug. 2021 · Thankfully, we found a nice variety of trails for hiking at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Lower Whiskeytown Falls. Located just west of Redding, CA, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area preserves 42,000 acres and includes the lake, mountains and historic buildings. Unfortunately, roughly 97% of the park burned in the Carr Fire in 2018.

The national recreation area's geology is complex and Shasta Bally, the park's tallest mountain, is particularly unstable and hazardous.
