It is located in the Irish Hills region of southern Michigan, just north of U.S. Route 12 along M-50. The village is located within Columbia Township.
Tompkins Township is in northwestern Jackson County and is bordered to the north by Ingham County. State highway M-50 crosses the township, leading southeast 14 miles (23 km) to Jackson, the county seat, and northwest 13 miles (21 km) to Eaton Rapids. The Grand River crosses the northeastern portion of the township.
