Édouard Manet, wurde am 23. Januar 1832 als Sohn einer wohlhabenden Familie im Pariser Stadtviertel Saint-Germain-des-Prés geboren. Nach Besuch des Institut Poiloup studierte er mit 12 Jahren am anerkannten Collége Rollin und begann mit dem Zeichenstudium. Nachdem er an der Marineakademie abgewiesen wurde, erhielt er seine akademische Ausbildung an der Kunstakademie bei Thomas Couture.
