Jean-Baptiste Berthier (1721–1804) was an officer (Lieutenant-Colonel) in the French Corps of Topographical Engineers during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. Jean-Baptiste, born 6 January 1721 in Tonnerre (Bourgogne), was the youngest son of Michel Berthier (1679-1731), a master wheelwright and his wife Jeanne Dumez (also spelt Dumetz or Dumay) (1685-after 1740).
