The Michigan native had been writing songs since the age of nine, and began recording as a teenager with producer Ollie McLaughlin, who also had a hand in the careers of Del Shannon, the Capitols, and Deon Jackson.

Barbara's hit song "Baby I'm Yours" was voted a Legendary Michigan Song in 2013. In 2016 Barbara Lewis became the fifth Historical Inductee into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends online Hall of Fame.
