Sherborne Castle (sometimes called Sherborne New Castle) is a 16th-century Tudor mansion southeast of Sherborne in Dorset, England, within the parish of Castleton. Originally built by Sir Walter Raleigh as Sherborne Lodge , and extended in the 1620s, it stands in a 1,200-acre (490 ha) park which formed a small part of the 15,000-acre (61 km 2 ) Digby estate .
At the suggestion of school governor Littleton Charles Powys, in 1930 the Education Committee of Dorset County Council approved Lord Digby's School for Girls taking over the lease of Sherborne House. Lord Digby's School moved in to Sherborne House on the 9th November 1931 and the School was formally opened on 18 February 1932 by Miss Lynda Grier , principal of Lady Margaret Hall , Oxford. [8]

The origin of a school for girls in Sherborne dates back to 1898, when Mr Kenelm Wingfield Digby, MP for North Dorset and resident of Sherborne Castle, decided that a girls’ school, similar to the long-established King Edward VI boys’ public school in Sherborne, was needed in the town.
