Rio Bravo is a 1959 Western directed by Howard Hawks and is considered the first of three films (all of which starred John Wayne ), which were variations on the story of a sheriff and his friends defending his office against an aggressive outlaw element in the town. The other two films in this "trilogy" were 1966's El Dorado and 1970's Rio Lobo.
